However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.įor PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. The party had Dalo teach them how to build an igloo, and that's how they survived nights on the glacier while travelling. Also, I modified the travel on the glacier rules a bit to make them more lenient. For example, I had to do a lot off the cuff to come up with what Alac the wizard's skull-shaped headquarters was like. I feel the various locale's and NPC's could have been fleshed out a bit more. In general, we're enjoying the modules quite a bit. The party really loved the Mead Spirit Quest part of the giant's encounter. Also, as the party was friendly with Blagothkos already, I made Brunvild the antagonistic giant. i don't know how you would be expected to run this showdown at the end reasonably using regular. I'm running the showdown battle at the end using the Unearthed Arcana mass combat rules ("When Armies Clash" article). He described the lay of the land and the various destinations to be explored. I had them discovered badly injured and unconscious by Dalo, and the woke up in his care. My party had befriended Blagothkos (the cloud giant owning the castle), and during the battle with the dragon at the end of HOTDQ, I had the dragon escape, team up with another dragon dispatched when the cult heard from Roth Modar that the castle was in danger (via sending), and the two dragons brought down the castle then with the PC's in it, and it crashed - setting the stage for Frozen Castle. The module says it's for 10th level characters, but my 8th level party of 5 has had no problems. I'm just finishing up running this, and I've used it as a transition adventure between Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat. Overall, a memorable couple sessions and a nice addition to RoT! Highly recommend if you're running ToD as it's a different scenario than those in the book. Highlights: the sorcerer teleporting a 50lb chunk of ice above the dragon and dropping it on it, artificer using wand of lightning bolts on orcs rushing her in a narrow tunnel, paladin and fighter Archer combo on Talis to do over 100 damage in their back to back turns with sharpshooter and smites, cleric sprinting from one end of the castle to the other and healing Dalo from unconsciousness after dragon breath dropped him, and the monk holding her own against a wave of 50+ enemies with some yeti support. Everyone survived thanks to some good planning and clever tactics. Full fight took 5 hours even with me not tracking orc health, with some holding a tunnel from waves of orcs while those up top took on an adult red dragon and Talis. I had the orcs attack just after dark to up the challenge. They split the party to defend the 3 cave entrances, the lower courtyard, and a few in the upper courtyard to coordinate and use ballistas. They has 40 yeti, Dalo (who I built as a barbarian), and Allac (who I made a 15th level transmutation wizard so he had control weather). Ended up going to Allac and the yetis, fought a pair of remorhaz, stole an egg, and framed the orcs.īattle for the castle though was the most fun. I had Dalo be at the castle checking it out to give the party info on where they could get help. See more as random loot from the lair in sea of moving ice, so teleported straight to the castle. One thing that threw me off is my party had a helm of telepathy that the found. Black dragons attacked characters in route to metallic dragons and red wizard left to be seen later. Stone giants went to Frost giants for help but party didn't go that route anyways. In my version Blagothkus was killed in the attack but didn't die in the castle so his wife's spirit still controls things. Attack was led by Rath Modar, 2 black dragons, a red dragon, and Talis the White (who has become a recurring villan and is now a high level wyrmspeaker as the one that recovered the white dragon mask). So I had the cult attack and crash the castle off screen. They had befriended Blagothkus and killed the dragon in HotDQ, though they let the giant take half the treasure as he left to go rally the giants. Had to tweak it some to make sense, but it was a blast! I slipped it in as a mission in the second council meeting. Just finished running this with my Tyranny of Dragons group.
